Joule, Journey, Joust, Jousting Contest, A Fable from The Child and The Prophet

“Jousting can be fun, Child. Let’s have a jousting contest and see how many joules you work up pulling Mr. Whale across the water,” said The Prophet as he looked at The Child lying on Mr. Whale.  She was complaining of boredom and not having anything to do.

“What’s jousting, Prophet?”

“Good question, Child."

“And joules too, Prophet? What are they?"

“What do you think?”

“No idea. Is it fun jousting and calculating joules?”

“Some people might say that?”

“Who, Prophet?”

“People who calculate.”

"Calculate what, Prophet?"

"Joules."

“So what is a joule? I’m lost.”

"You’re not lost, Child. You’re lying on Mr. Whale, suffering from a state called boredom.”

"Oh wow, what's a state, Prophet? You keep speaking strange words."

"You don't say, Child."

“My journey hasn't been easy since I hooked up with you.”

The Prophet chuckled.

“Do you want to joust or not Child?”

“If I knew what it meant, I’d say yes.”

“Say yes, and surprise yourself.”

“Okay, but if I don’t like this, I'm going to stop immediately.”

"Agreed."

“What must I do, Prophet?”

“Take this rope, I've made and tie it around the middle section of Mr. Whale's body.”

"For what?"

"So you can pull him across the water."

"And what's Mr. Whale going to do?"

"He's going to be on the other side of the water facing you."

"And then?"

"He's going to try to stop you from pulling him."

"Prophet, that sounds like work. Mr. Whale weighs a ton."

"Might be, but we can calculate the joules."

"And what are joules?"

"That's what you're about to find out, Child."

    1. I think The Child is waiting also. She gets pretty frustrated with The Prophet because he never tells her.

  7. I have so many emotions when I read through this story. It is so thought provoking for me. I am loving it. I had to go back and read a few days that I missed, but now I am all caught up. Today's post made me think about how we often are scared of what we don't know. In reality though, some of those scariest things, are the things that allow us to grow the most! Thanks for visiting my blog!

    1. You have said that wonderfully and I love it. "Some of the scariest things are the things that allow us to grow the most." I would love to quote you in one of my articles on another blog that have, if you don't mind.

  8. Like with the child here, curiosity is key. Keep asking, keep questioning, and who knows ... the answer might surprise.
Great post, and so very emotional.

  9. Ooh, interesting challenge. Boredom is a crummy thing. My mother taught me never to admit to it and keep busy. If I complained of the state she would tell me to go get the broom. :) I would rather play with a whale.

  11. And here I always thought a joust was with horses and lances. Now that would have been fun to watch on the Whale.

    1. It sure would have. I toyed with that combination and how to use it for a while before I decided to broaden the use and not limit it to horses and lances. A writer's privilege. Thank you so much for coming by. Your comment had me smiling.

  18. What an lovely adventure this Child has begun -- with a mysterious Prophet to guide her. Curiosity and boredom create a kind of mental jousting . . . with curiosity vanquishing boredom even before the Whale and Child begin. Thank you for visiting my site as well. Can't believe we're truly making progress every day on this A2Z challenge. May the rest of the week go well for you.

  19. The word 'boredom' caught my attention.
Kids of today are quickly bored. I can't understand it. They always need something MORE, to occupy them.

    1. Unfortunately, that is so. I think we as adults have somehow taken the excitement out of childhood with our demands that kids grow up before their time.
